Why the yearly visit is worth keeping

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and early type 2 diabetes generally announce themselves with nothing at all. They are found on a cuff reading or a lab panel, which is to say they are found at a visit that happens because it was scheduled, not because something hurt. The United States Preventive Services Task Force keeps a public list of which screenings have evidence behind them at which ages, and the physical is where that list gets narrowed down to the handful that actually apply to you. It is also the appointment where a nagging symptom you have been ignoring finally gets said out loud.

How to get more out of the appointment

Come with your questions written down; the ones people forget are almost always the ones they meant to lead with. Bring every medication you take, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, either in the bottles or on a list. If another office ran labs or imaging in the last year, bring the results or the name of the practice so they can be requested. If you track your blood pressure or blood sugar at home, bring the readings — several weeks of real numbers are worth more than one taken in an exam room.
